Are you a Goal Setter or a Goal Getter?

The beginning of another year is upon us. The time of year that everyone gets excited about the possibilities of what they can achieve with the fresh start of a New Year. To better help make your possibilities a reality, I would like to discuss Goal Setting and Goal Getting! Goal Setting is an extremely powerful technique for accomplishment, but for Goal Setting to really be effective it requires more than just writing down what we want to achieve. It is important to apply steps that will help to define exactly what your goals are and implement steps to achieve your goals with more success. Goal setting is about deciding, prioritizing, and organizing the ACTIONS that will be needed to realize achievement. Almost all successful people credit goal setting as the key ingredient of achievement. Anthony Robbins said, “Setting goals is the first step in turning the invisible into the visible.
The following are steps for Successful Goal Setting
1. Form a Goal Statement
A goal statement clearly identifies your specific goal and is the foundation for the goal setting process. Many goal setting experts use the acronym S.M.A.R.T., as a way to define their goal statement. SMART stands for: Specific, Measurable, Action-Oriented, Realistic, Time and Resource Constrained. Goals should be specific to the point that we know exactly what we want to achieve, measurable so we can chart our progress, action-oriented to indicate which actions will produce results, realistic so that we may learn and grow from our actions, and time and resources constrained meaning that there is a deadline for completion and we only have a limited amount of resources to apply toward obtaining our goal.
2. Break your Goal down into ACTION steps
Now that we have formed our Goal Statement, we must break down the actions that will be necessary in order to obtain your goal. Carefully define each action to insure that it contributes to the overall goal, assign and delegate actions if needed, and follow up to insure actions are complete.
3. Stay Motivated and Focused
Motivation and focus are the fuel that runs our goal setting machine. They enable us to continue to work toward our goals when the inevitable failure or challenges emerge, and they will! But from these small victories we gain a sense of achieve and satisfaction from moving that much closer to realizing our success, giving us the knowledge and confidence to set bigger goals in the future. Andrew Carnegie wrote, “If you want to be happy, set a goal that commands your thoughts, liberates your energy and inspires your hopes.
4. Stay on Track
Reaching our goal requires planning and regular review of our progress, with a little persistence thrown in for good measure. We need some sort of system to keep us organized and accountable. The best method is to keep all information and planning in one place. With either the use of a day planner or the Outlook program on your computer you can organize important task and track your actions.
5. Review your Actions
Goal Setting is a process that takes time and commitment. When breaking down our goals into tasks and actions, patience is definitely required. All tasks and actions should be reviewed at least once a week. The great thing about frequent review is that this forces us to take a realistic look at our progress and the decisions we are making. Regular review allows us to notice tasks and actions that aren’t being achieved on time.
6. Celebrate your Success and Renew Your Goals
Being a Goal Setter and a Goal Getter is a confidence building, motivational creating experience. Goal Getting allows us to gain the knowledge to increase our goals and make new ones. It builds a sense of pride in our self and our staff members. Finally, Goal Getting is mark of a true professional and separates professionals from amateurs.
Reachable goals are WRITTEN.
High achievers always know precisely what they want, because they’ve written it down. Often, they write a short description of their goals every single morning, as a personal reminder of their priorities and their objectives. The act of writing your goals down vastly increases your chance of success. Write it down! Then, keep your notes where you can see and read them every day.
Reachable goals are SHARED.
We are far more likely to stick to our plan and reach our goals if we know our friends and family support us. Being part of a team increases our determination, our stamina, and our courage. Caution: Never share your goals with anyone who may ridicule, tease or discourage you! The world is full of doubters and you have no time for them. But, find a support team, a group of cheerleaders, and a coach who will encourage you every step of the way. High achievers count on and work with other winners!
Reachable goals are CONSISTENT WITH YOUR VALUES.
One of the biggest reasons people fail to achieve their goals is that they have conflict between their behavior and their values. However, when your values and your goals are in agreement, there is no stopping you! Clarify your values first, then set simple, specific, measurable, tangible, written goals that are consistent with those values. You will achieve them, every single time!

The Martial Arts Minds - The Key to Success

One Characteristic that separates the martial arts from other sports is that the martial arts combines both physical and mental training. Beginning students are taught to think of themselves as becoming future Black Belt leaders. This vision helps them be focused and motivated to come to practice every day. Each class and new belt rank brings them one step closer to their goal of Black Belt.
Every martial artist is able to visualize success and tap the power of her or her mind. You will be amazed at your accomplishments when you use a few minutes every day to see yourself achieving your goal. Follow these steps.
Step 1: Pick a goal that you want to achieve.
Step 2: Find a quiet place and spend a few minutes every day visualizing yourself achieving your goal.
Step 3: Don’t just picture it, live it! You must experience the success in your mind as though it is really happening. You should envision all of the actions and emotions of accomplishing your goal.
Step 4: Repeat steps 1 thought 3 again and again every day until you achieve your goal.
Your mind is your most powerful weapon. Visualization is the art of seeing yourself succeed repeatedly until you believe success is possible. The process of visualization helps the body to accomplish what the mind has already seen.

See it, Believe it, Achieve it!

Are you ready for an emergency?

Four years ago this month, we were struck with a weather storm that left many with out power, gas or food. The east side was without power for almost 3 weeks. This year the forecasters are saying our winter is going to be colder and stormier than ever. Part of the martial arts is being prepared for all situations. We want to learn not only self-defense, but self-preservation as well. This cold streak reminded many of us how ill-prepared we are for a natural disaster. Over the past couple of years our country has faced hurricanes, earthquakes and floods. We must plan ahead and prepare so we can face these emergencies with confidence. We have complied a list of suggested items to be stored for emergencies. We highly recommend that you have a smaller kit in your vehicle and a larger kit at your home (your workplace is also a good idea). You should tailor your kit to your individual needs. You can be very basic or very comprehensive in your kits. You are the only one who can decide exactly what you and your family needs. Not all the items are necessary but the more you are prepared in an emergency the better off you and your family will be. Be sure to store your kit in a convenient place that all family members know and can get at it quickly when the lights go out. Keep items in airtight plastic bags and containers. Change your water supply every six months so it stays fresh. Replace stored foods by their expiration dates. Check you kit and replace batteries yearly. Remember he who fails to prepare prepares to fail!

Here is a basic list of items to have on hand in your emergency kits:
  • Water, 1 gallon of water per person per day for at least three days, for drinking & sanitation.
  • Food, at least a three day supply of non-perishable. (We recommend M.R.E.’s, freeze dried foods, ration bars, energy bars or other non-perishables).
  • Battery-powered or hand crank radio with extra batteries.
  • Flashlight with extra batteries. (We recommend that you pre-place one in each room of your house)
  • Light sticks (Great for kids and safer than candles, plus they are water proof so they can light up a shower)
  • First Aid Kit—Don’t forget to take CPR/1st Aid Training at Seattle Tae Kwon Do
  • Whistle to signal for help or to let people know where you are.
  • Dusk mask, to help filed contaminated air.
  • Plastic sheeting or tarps.
  • Duct Tape
  • Moist toweletts, toilet paper, garbage bags & bag ties for personal sanitation.
  • Multi-tool, wrench or pliers for turning off utilities or for repairs. SOG Tools are sold at Seattle Tae Kwon Do.
  • Manual Can Opener
  • Prescription medication and classes.
  • Infant formula and diapers in you have a small child.
  • Pet food and extra water for your pet.
  • Copies of important family documents such as insurance polices, identification and bank records in a sealed waterproof container.
  • Cash, preferably in small bills
  • Emergency space blanket (Lightweight Mylar type). You should also have one in your 1st Aid Kit for shock victims.
  • Sleeping bag or warm blanket for each person.
  • Complete change of clothing.
  • Extra pair of warm socks.
  • Water-Proof Gloves (latex and warm)
  • Hat

The Shoerack Theory

SHOERACK THEORY

It has long been a custom in the Martial Arts, that upon entering the dojang, students remove their shoes and place them in the shoerack. Part of this custom is for hygiene and cleanliness. A clean dojnag and well kept dojang is certainly better than a dirty one.

Even better is a philosophy called the Shoerack Theory.

Students remove their shoes and place them in the shoerack for a more purposeful reason. They are also placing all of life’s challenges and any stressful thoughts or negative issues from their day, in their shoes before entering the mat.

This allows you to give yourself fully to your training...

Mentally, physically and emotionally…then after a great class, you will be able to better deal with any of the challenges placed in your shoes before class.

Sometimes, you actually may find they’ve disappeared all together. Meaning that after a great workout and practice session, you have relieved yourself of all the stress you had before your class and/or relieved yourself from any negativity.

Martial Arts training is proven to be an outstanding way to relieve stress and cleanse your mind, body and spirit of any negativity.

If you practice this philosophy every time you enter the dojang, you will find yourself in a better mood and you will also enjoy greater benefit from your Martial Arts training.

This philosophy can also be applied to walking into your own home.

Mentally, leaving all stress and challenges in your shoes upon entering so you can enjoy quality time with your family and loved ones.

One way you can maximize the benefits of your Martial Arts training is to practice and apply the philosophies you learn in class to your everyday life outside the dojang.

Master Richards reveals "7 Magic Words"

Martial Arts, Karate, Tae Kwon Do, Judo, and Jujitsu all have a common thread taught by the Instructors and Masters. Self Discipline, Confidence, Focus, and Self Control being amongst the most important of the attitudes.

However, every Martial Art starts with attitude... an attitude that is expected from the moment you enter the school, all the way through to the day you receive your Black Belt.

RESPECT!

Respect isn't just being couteous, respect is treating other people in the way that you would like to be or expect to be treated yourself. Respect within the Martial Arts is checking your ego or your bad day at the door on the way into training, so that you can work with other students with a clear and open mind, helping them with their journey while keeping both of you safe and injury free.

I believe that the first stage of Respect is "Respectful Communication", or the way that we speak to each other. -And for that reason we use the 7 Magic Words at Seattle Tae Kwon Do. Seven words that aren't just respectful and courteous but also words that once said with certainty can also be an important part of confidence, or being clear and certian with what you are saying.

YES, SIR

NO, SIR

YES, MAAM

NO, MAAM

PLEASE

THANK YOU

YOU'RE WELCOME

By using these words with other students, teachers, instructors, parents and even friends, you will begin the process of respectful communication. Treating somebody with respect should always invoke the postive reaction of respect back.

"Every human being, of whatever origin, of whatever station, deserves respect. We must each respect others even as we respect ourselfves.

The toughest job in the world!

Dear Parents,

The toughest, and most rewarding job in the world is being a parent. As a parent our job is to love, nuture and guide our children. Our primary duty is to prepare them for life. This means, we need to develop their character. It can be hard to do this when we get caught up in the details of life and parenthood. It is hard while going grocery shopping with three little ones, to talk about respect and honor. It is near impossible while driving past MacDonald's to talk about self-control or discipline. While these things are hard they are not impossible. That is where Tae Kwon Do training comes in. Each week, while in class, you kids are engaged in conversations about intergrity, honor, respect, discipline and how to set and achieve goals. These instructors, help make your job as a parent so much easier. However, it is a not a one-way road. The parents, must also work with the instructors to help emphasis the importance to the lessons taught and how they are to live the lessons they learn. For example, sometime in your child's training, they are going to say, "Mom/Dad, I want to quit". Be prepared for this as every parent has to face this challenge. This is when you need to remember your job as a parent is to help mold their character and make them a better person. You need to remind them of their goals and the commitment they made towards achieveing a Black Belt. You are not teaching them anything by simply letting them quit, other than it is okay to quit when things get hard. Do you think great men, like Abraham Lincoln. would have become president if after his first unsuccessful bid for congress gave up and decided it was too hard? The same is true for your kids. They are young and need to be taught that the most important part of setting a goal is not to give up once they have set it. The same is true for parents, once we have set upon being a parent, we cannot forget to teach them how to live a honorable, good life. Being a parent is a tough job, but in the end it is worth every bit of effort.

Sincerely,

Master Brandon Richards

The facts come out - Martial Arts Makes Smarter Kids!

Get your children away from the TV - Martial Arts makes smarter brains

Want to raise healthy and smart children?

Then don't allow them to be couch potatoes. Martial Arts training, it turns out, does more than benefit the body and overall health -- Martial Arts builds smarter brains in youngsters, too.

That's the news from a study just published in the journal Brain Research. Scientists used magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to measure the relative size of specific structures in the brains of 49 children, all of whom were 9 or 10 years old. The research team discovered that the hippocampus (part of the brain inside the temporal lobe that plays an important part in memory and learning) tended to be significantly larger in the kids who were in Martial Arts. What's more, the fit children performed better on a memory test than youngsters the same age who were not in Martial Arts."This is the first study I know of that has used MRI measures to look at differences in brains between kids who are in Martial Arts and kids who aren't fit. Beyond that, it relates those measures of brain structure to cognition," University of Illinois psychology professor and Beckman Institute director Art Kramer said in a statement to the media. Dr. Kramer headed the study along with doctoral student Laura Chaddock and kinesiology and community health professor Charles Hillman. The researchers zeroed in on the hippocampus because it has long been known this brain structure is intricately involved in both learning and memory and that a larger hippocampus is associated with better performance on spatial reasoning and other cognitive tasks. Moreover, previous research in older adults and animals has shown that exercise can increase the size of the hippocampus. For the new study, the University of Illinois scientists measured the children's physical fitness levels by seeing how efficiently the youngsters used oxygen while running on a treadmill. "The physically fit children were much more efficient than the less-fit children at utilizing oxygen," Dr. Kramer noted.When the researchers analyzed the MRI data on the young research subjects, they found the Martial Arts kids tended to have significantly larger hippocampal volume.

In fact, this part of the Martial Arts kids' brains was a whopping 12 percent bigger, relative to total brain size, than the hippocampus in non-Martial Arts kids.

What's more, the children who were in Martial Arts also scored higher on tests of relational memory (the ability to remember and integrate various types of information) than their less-fit peers."Martial Arts children had higher performance on the relational memory task, higher fit children had larger hippocampal volumes, and in general, children with larger hippocampal volumes had better relational memory," Dr. Chaddock concluded in the media statement."We knew that experience and environmental factors and socioeconomic status all impact brain development," Dr. Kramer added. "If you get some lousy genes from your parents, you can't really fix that, and it's not easy to do something about your economic status. But here's something that we can do something about."Bottom line: getting children out of the house and in Martial Arts could have an important effect on brain development and even intelligence.
Summary, if you want smarter kids then get them involved with Martial Arts. Call Seattle Tae Kwon Do at 425-775-0299 to register for a free month of training, plus uniform. Just see how smart your kids can get in one month!

Warning Signs that a Child is Being Bullied

What is bullying?

Bullying among children is aggressive behavior that is intentional and that involves and imbalance of power or strength. Typically, it is repeated over time. Bullying can take many forms, such as hitting and .or punching (physical bullying); teasing or name-calling (verbal bullying); intimidation using gestures or social exclusion (nonverbal bullying or emotional bullying); and sending insulting messages by phone or computer email (cyber bullying).* Many children, particulary boys and older children, do not tell their parents or adults at school about being bulllied. It is important tha adults are vigilant to possible signs of bullying.

Warning signs

Possible warning signs that a child is being bullied:
  • Comes home with torn, damaged, or missing pieces of clothing, books, or other belingings;

  • Has unexplained cuts, bruises, and scratches;

  • Has few, if any friends, with whom he or she spends time;

  • Seems afraid of going to school, walking to and from school;

  • Has lost interest in school work or suddenly begins to do poorly in school;

  • Appears sad, moody, teary, or depressed when he or she comes home;

  • Complains frequently of headaches, stomachaches, or other physical ailments;

  • Has trouble sleeping or has frequent band dreams;

  • Experiences a loss of appetite; or

  • Appears anxious and suffers from low self-esteem.

What to do if you suspect that your child is being bullied?

1. Talk with your child. Tell your child that you are concerned and that you'd like to help. Here are some questions that can get the discussion going:

Some direct questions:

  • "I'm worried about you. Are there any kids at school who may be picking on you or bullying you?"

  • Are there any kids at school who tease you in a mean way?"

  • "Are there any kids at school who leave you out or exclude you on purpose?"

Some subtle questions:

  • "Do you have any special friends at school this year? Who are they? Who do you hang out with?"

  • "Who do you sit with at lunch and on the bus?"

  • "are there any kids at school who you really don't like? Why don't you like them? Do they ever pick on you or leave you out of things?"

2. Talk with staff at your child's school. Call or set up an appointment to talk with your child's teacher. He or she will probably be in the best position to understand the relationships between your child and other peers at school. Share your concerns about your child and ask the teacher such questions as:

  • "How does my child get along with other students in his or her class?"

  • "With whom does he or she spend free time?"

  • "Have you noticed or have youever suspected that my child is bullied by other students?" Give examples of some ways that children can be bullied to be sure that the teacher is not focusing only on one kind of bullying (such as physical bullying).

Ask the teacher to talk with other adults who interact with your child at school (such as the music teacher, physical education teacher, or bus driver) to see whether they have observed students bullying your child.

If you are not comfortable talking with your child's teacher, or if you are not satisfied with the conversation, make an appointment to meet with your child's guidance counselor or principal to discuss your concerns.

If you obtain information from your child or from staff at your child's school that leads you to believe that he or she is being bullied, take quick action. Bullying can have serious effects on children.

If, after talking with your child and staff at his or her school, you don't suspect that yur child is being bullied, stay vigilant to other possible problems that your child may be having. Some of the warning signs above (e.g., depression, social isolation, and loss of interest in school) may be signs of other serious problems. Share your concerns with a counselor at your child's school.

Master Brandon Richards Graduates FBI Citizen's Academy

On June 5, 2010, Brandon Richards, lead Master Instructor at Seattle Tae Kwon Do graduated from the FBI Citizen’s Academy. This is an eight week program designed for business, civic and religious leaders in our community to have a better understanding of how the FBI works and how we can help them in their efforts. Master Richards learned firsthand the procedures the FBI utilizes to keep our community and country safe. This course is run only once a year and is taught by senior field agents and is personally overseen by Special Agent in Charge, Laura Laughlin. It is limited to only 30 participants which must past a detailed background check and must be recommended by a FBI agent to participate. As a graduate of this course, Master Richards will go on to be part of the FBICA Alumni Association which helps educate the community on what the FBI does and teaches valuable classes on personal safety issues. Master Richards hopes to incorporate some of the valuable information he gained from this course in some of the ongoing child safety and awareness courses now taught at Seattle Tae Kwon Do in Mountlake Terrace. Mr. Richards looks forward to a long lasting relationship with the FBI Seattle Field Division through the FBI Citizen’s Academy Alumni Association.

Dear Seattle Tae Kwon Do families,

This year our Seattle Tae Kwon Do competition team will be attending the International Tae Kwon Do Championship tournament in Chicago July 30-August 1. We are very excited to be a part of this event and our Booster Club has been working hard in fund raising to help offset the costs of coaches travel expenses and competitor entry fees.

We have planned a silent auction to be held during the week of June 14th and commencing with black belt graduation on June 19th.

We need your help to procure items for our silent auction. Do you own a business? Are you able to donate a gift certificate or service? Do you own a vacation home or time share? Are you able to donate a weekend away? Do you know someone who does? Can you make a gift basket to donate? Anything you can do to help our kids is greatly appreciated.

Please email to seattletaekwondo@comcast.net for a donation form. Please fill it out and turn it in with your item. All items need to be turned in by June 4, 2010.

For more information, contact one of our board members. Jennifer Coop 425-485-9171, Brenda Bequette 425-775-4339 or Wendy Krumroy 425-774-8879.

Free Pocket Bike

Dear Seattle Tae Kwon Do Students,

Above you see a picture of a very cool, Pocket Bike, worth over $400! We previously gave it away at a special event, but the mom of the winner didn't want it (Can you believe it!?!), so we substitued it for something else. Then we gave it to the Mountlake Terrace Easter Egg Hunt as a grand prize, but the promoters were afraid of liabilities. So it just keeps coming back to us. So enough, is enough! On Saturday, April 24th at 11:30am, at the Color Belt Graduation, we will be doing a special drawing with YOUR NAME IN IT. On this special day, Mountlake Terrace City Councilman, John Zambrano will be receiving an Honorary Black Belt from the Students and Citizens of Mountlake Terrace. We will have Councilman Zambrano pick a name out of a bowl and the name picked will win this Pocket Bike. The bowl will be filled with the names of students at Seattle Tae Kwon Do. If your name is picked, you win! There is no catch, you simply need to be a student at our school and be present to win. If your name is pulled and you are not present, we will continue pulling names until someone that is present wins. This bike is lots of fun for kids (Supervised of course) and adults. It can hold someone up to 275lbs and can go up to 47 miles an hour! The summer season is quickly coming and this bike is sure to be a hit. Agian, you need to be here on Saturday, April 24th at 11:30am to win.

I hope to see you win this bike!

Warmly,

Master Brandon Richards
Seattle Tae Kwon Do

Please sign our Petition

Dear Students,

Grandmaster Duk Gun Kwon, President of the United States National Taekwondo Federation has asked for signatures from Tae Kwon Do students regarding the recent election of a convicted felon as President of the Kukkiwon, World Taekwondo Headquarters in Korea. It is unethical for a person of low ethical nature to hold this position. Seattle Tae Kwon Do wholeheartedly supports Grandmaster Kwon in his efforts to have the current Kukkiwon President with someone worthy of the position. I would like to ask that all students and families of Seattle Tae Kwon Do sign the petition in the front lobby in hopes of maintaining the standards of Tae Kwon Do.
Sincerely,

Master Brandon Richards
7th Degree Black Belt

Seattle Tae Kwon Do to Honor Mountlake Terrace Police Officers

In late November 2009 in response to slain Police officer Timothy Brenton and the killed Lakewood Police Officers, Master Brandon Richards the director of Seattle Tae Kwon Do in Mountlake Terrace took action, by collecting donations from the students at Seattle Tae Kwon Do to help the families of the fallen Officers. Master Richards, whose father was a Whatcom County Deputy Sherriff could identify with the families and wanted to take action to help them in this time of crisis. He collected funds and purchased T-Shirts from KOMO AM 1000 Commentators Radio Show. 100% of the proceeds of these shirts went directly to the Officer’s Families. In addition to this Brandon Richards matched every dollar raised by his students, thus doubling the money collected. These shirts were then purchased and will be donated to the Offices of the Mountlake Terrace Police Department on Tuesday, March 23, 2010 6:30pm at the Mountlake Terrace Police Department located 5906 232nd St. SW, Mountlake Terrace, WA. 40 Shirts, plus 40 hand written “Thank you” cards from the children of Seattle Tae Kwon Do will go to the officers in appreciation of their service.

All students, friends and family members are welcome to meet us at the Mountlake Terrace City Hall on Tuesday, Feb. 23rd at 6:30pm for the presentation.
